Learnings from Borlänge

School Anita Halim More

The design of Högskolan Dalarna in Borlänge is inspired by the canonical architecture of universities in Sweden. Since it is located in a dense urban area, the height and proportion of the university building is adjusted to its surroundings. Moreover, design of the main entrance has maintained the human scale in order to invite people to enter the building. The choice of the more slender “Tower of the wind” Corinthian order is also of this reason. The main building material is brick, with some part of rustication around the side entrances and in the two towers located beside the entrance. Both of these towers also hold sculpture of Athena on the top and are painted in the local colour of “Falun red”, representing the idea of “celebration of education” as the building’s concept.
